Onion Poultice

Onion Poultice

5 from 1 vote
Onion poultices have a long history of use to break up lung congestion, sinus congestion, and ear congestion from viral infections, especailly before the production and use of modern antibiotics. Onions boast powerful antioxidants, antibiotic and antiviral properties. Obviously, use common sense when it comes to treating at home. For best results, begin using onion poultice at the first sign of illness and stay consistent.

Ingredients

  • 1 Medium/Large Onion, Chopped yellow, white or purple onions work best.
  • 1 Tea Towel

Method

  1. chop onions and saute lightly in water for 5-10 minutes, or until fragrant and translucent.
  2. Pour cooked onions and juice into the tea towel and fold the edges inward.
  3. The folded towel now makes a poultice and can be placed on chest, back, head or side of head where there is a need to break up mucous or congestion.
  4. Make sure that the poultice is hot but not too hot to cause a burn, especially on children and babies.
  5. Place where needed and allow it to remain in place for at least 10-20 minutes. When it cools, rewarm it in a pan of water over low heat. Reuse the poultice for 1 day, and make fresh each day.

Notes

Note: You can use the same poultice for 1 day. When the poultice has cooled from use, place it in a pan with water on low heat, to warm it back up. Continue application until symptoms have resolved.
It’s common to have a more productive cough after using the onion poultice as it begins to clear the lungs.
Add Lavender, Frankincense, Chamomile (for babies and small children).
